What age should I start health screening?
One of the most common assumptions about preventative health is that it is something you begin at a certain age — typically somewhere in your 40s or 50s. The clinical reality is more nuanced, and the answer depends significantly on your individual risk profile rather than a number on a calendar.
HealthScreen is available to all adults aged 18 and above.
Why earlier can matter Many of the conditions that HealthScreen is designed to detect — cardiovascular disease, metabolic dysfunction, early organ changes, hormonal imbalances, and genetic risk factors — develop silently over years or even decades before symptoms appear. By the time a condition becomes symptomatic, the window for early intervention may have already narrowed.
Cardiac risk, for example, is not determined by age alone. Conditions like Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) — a genetic condition that elevates cholesterol from birth — can drive plaque accumulation in younger adults who appear clinically well. Biomarker data showing subclinical metabolic dysfunction, elevated ApoB, or early inflammatory markers can be present in adults in their 30s and early 40s.
When does HealthScreen recommend starting? Rather than giving a single age, HealthScreen's physician-led model is designed to assess what is most clinically relevant for you based on your personal circumstances. Key considerations include:
- Family history — a first-degree relative with heart disease, cancer, stroke, or diabetes before age 60 is one of the strongest indicators for earlier, more comprehensive screening
- Lifestyle risk factors — smoking, high BMI, physical inactivity, poor diet, or chronic stress
- Emerging symptoms — unexplained fatigue, cognitive changes, weight fluctuation, or hormonal concerns
- Personal health goals — for those actively optimising their health and longevity, earlier baseline data provides more value over time
As a general guide, many HealthScreen patients are in their 30s through to their 60s. Those in their 30s with family history or lifestyle risk factors, those in their 40s seeking a comprehensive baseline, and those in their 50s and beyond motivated by early detection are all well-suited to our programs.
