What is DEXA and when is it recommended?

DEXA — Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry — is a highly accurate medical imaging technique used primarily to measure bone mineral density. It uses two low-dose X-ray beams to differentiate between bone, fat mass, and lean muscle mass across different segments of the body.

What does a DEXA scan measure? A DEXA scan provides precise data on bone mineral density (BMD), a key indicator of osteoporosis risk and skeletal health.

How is DEXA different to an InBody scan? HealthScreen's standard body composition assessment uses the InBody970 — a state-of-the-art bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) device that provides detailed, segmental body composition data without any radiation exposure.

DEXA provides a higher level of precision for bone mineral density measurement and is the clinical gold standard for assessing osteoporosis. While the InBody970 is ideal for ongoing composition tracking, DEXA is recommended in specific clinical scenarios.

When is DEXA recommended? A DEXA scan may be recommended by your HealthScreen physician when:

  • There is concern about bone density — for example, in postmenopausal women, older adults, or those with a history of fractures or long-term corticosteroid use

DEXA is available as part of select HealthScreen programs. To discuss whether a DEXA scan is appropriate for you, speak with your physician during your consultation or contact our team on 1300 03 1300.
